At the root of all successful tasks lies the right choices about the method and equipment needed to complete them.
Increasingly, for tree surgeons, consistent success is founded on using Oil&Steel Octoplus spider lifts to prune, reduce or remove trees.
In the example illustrated, an Octoplus 17 spider boom has been used to work at height on a tree adjacent to a paved area behind a property.
The spider lift could be set up next to the tree, allowing a tree surgeon to work safely and efficiently without the need for conventional rope access.
Tree work safer from spider lifts
Hird Sales is the UK distributor for all Oil&Steel products, including advanced spider lifts and truck mount platforms.
Carl Cooper, Sales and After-Sales Manager at Hird Sales, said: “Regulatory agencies like the HSE and many organisations that commission tree work are increasingly stipulating it should be carried out from access platforms, unless it is not possible to do so.
“This is because it is so much safer. This is particularly the case where trees are affected by ash dieback, which causes branches to become brittle and weak, making climbing with ropes unsafe.
“Tree management specialists also find their work is more productive and of a higher quality, which is better for the long-term health of the tree.
“Because of its impressive working envelope, the Octoplus 17 is ideal for tree work. It can also be towed on a trailer behind a van or 4×4 with a standard car licence, making it flexible and cost-effective to operate.”
‘Brilliant’ over rough terrain
The Octoplus 17 spider lift has a maximum working height of 17m, a maximum outreach of 7.6m and a maximum load capacity of 250kg.
Stowed for tracking, with its quick-release basket removed, the spider cherry picker is just 785mm wide and 1980mm high, allowing it to be tracked through garden gates and down narrow paths.
Equally, it can be tracked into buildings through single doorways, where the platform’s tracks aid working across sensitive floors.
As a tracked spider platform, the Octoplus 17 performs brilliantly over uneven and unstable terrain. Its hydraulic tracks can be extended to increase stability, contributing to gradeability of 35% on upward slopes and 27% on downward ones.

Automatic outrigger levelling
Other features tree surgeons appreciate about Oil&Steel spider lifts include:
- All-steel boom and body panels, making the platform more robust than competitor machines
- All power cables and chains stowed in the boom, which reduces snagging risks and enhances reliability
- High ground clearance when outriggers are deployed, supporting work across uneven terrain
- One button platform automatic outrigger levelling and stowing for fast and safe platform set-up
- The basket automatically remaining the same distance from a tree, hedge or wall while it is raised or lowered, making operating the platform easier and safer
More Octoplus spiders to choose
Ultimately, the Oil&Steel Octoplus 17 can reach places and complete tasks that are beyond the scope of conventional platforms.
It is also just one platform in the Oil&Steel range. Hird Sales can supply the Octoplus 21. It is also a firm favourite with tree surgeons, with a maximum working height of 20.7m and a maximum outreach of 10.6m, the best in its class.
There is also the new Oil&Steel Octoplus 30, which has a maximum working height of 29.6m and a maximum outreach of 16.3m.
All Octoplus spider lifts can be supplied with low-emissions petrol or diesel engines, with bi-energy diesel and mains cable electric power, or all electric lithium battery power.
