Hird Sales has successfully handed over a Tadano Oil & Steel Octoplus 21, along with a Brian James Trailer to I Want Plants, the plant installation specialists.
Purchased by Managing Director, Richard Rowlands, the 20.7m tracked spider boom was handed over to Operations Director, Ollie Brighton.
The company specialises in biophilic design, simply meaning the integration of nature into the built environment. And as a key type of nature-based solution, urban green infrastructure plays an important role in creating more sustainable cities.
In a bid to keep powered access for maintenance in-house, the spider boom and transport trailer became the answer for swifter jobs and more efficient working.
A self-sustaining solution
Aiming for self-sufficiency, the Manchester-based family-run business needed a solution that steered away from hiring access platforms.
The investment into their own powered access fleet gives I Want Plants greater flexibility when planning maintenance work. Allowing the team to respond more efficiently to customer requirements and schedule projects on their own terms.
Meaning faster response times to customer requirements, and no more waiting for hire quotes.
But the benefits go beyond saving time. It is hoped that by investing in the O&S Octoplus 21 it will drive substantial long-term cost savings by reducing reliance on external hire.

Proving itself on site
The Hird Sales team carried out three demonstrations of the equipment across different sites. Enabling the I Want Plants team to get a feel for the tracked spider boom on the types of jobs it would be involved in regularly.
This customer-centric philosophy is what sets Hird Sales apart.
The sales team works closely with customers to identify the right solutions for their specific application, ensuring equipment delivers the best possible performance for the job.
Carrying out the range of demos gave the team the confidence to choose the Octoplus 21 spider boom, having seen in person that it met their specific operational requirements.

Spider boom for plant installations
Designed from the bottom up, the Octoplus 21 from Oil & Steel travels with tracks rather than wheels.
It’s equally at home tackling jobs in a city-centre or in rural environments. Thanks to better traction, and more manoeuvrability, it can take on a range of ground and site types.
And at just 785mm wide in tracking mode, the spider boom can move through doorways, down paths, and through gates with ease. Making access for the I Want plants team effortless, efficient, and quick. Shortening down scheduling time and reducing costs.
Though its compactness is not the only area it shines in.
The machine boasts a 20.7m working height and a maximum outreach of 10.6m. Its reach capabilities make it suitable for landscaping and live wall maintenance.
And wouldn’t we know? Hird Sales has supplied a vast range of arborist and tree surgeon businesses with the same series of equipment.
The Brian James Trailers plant trailer, supplied in tandem with the boom, makes transporting equipment between sites simple and efficient. It can be easily towed by a van or other standard vehicle. Providing a convenient solution for site-to-site transportation.

Bringing experience forward
Dan Holgate, Area Sales Manager at Hird Sales said: “We’re extremely pleased to have successfully handed over the platform to the I Want Plants team in Manchester.
We were glad to provide three demonstrations to the team over the course of the deal to further display the Octoplus 21’s vast range of capabilities.
This gave the team the upmost confidence in us and their new equipment, and the ability to see it at work before committing.
We have worked with similar businesses before, having delivered Octoplus 17s, and of course, the Octoplus 21 to arborists across the UK. So, we were already knowledgeable in understanding what I Want Plants required and recommending them the best suited equipment.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with them through our after-sales department.”
Access solutions for success
The investment in the Octoplus 21 demonstrates how the right solutions can help businesses deliver green infrastructure and progressive biophilic designs more efficiently, whilst also supporting the ongoing maintenance of existing spaces.
We are confident I Want Plants is well positioned to enhance efficiency and support its continued commitment to architectural planting.
Hird Sales is proud to support the team with innovative access solutions that help drive sustainable development and long-term success.
